Rolled Plate vs. Cast Tool & Jig
Many customers ask the sales team at Schupan Aluminum Sales “what is the best plate stock for my application”. There are some very distinct differences and usages that can apply for Rolled Plate vs. Cast Tool & Jig Plate.

Aluminum Plate
Cast Tool & Jig Plate is used primarily by customers that are looking for consistency in machining as well as flatness. Typically, CTJ plate is produced from ¼ inch thick to 4 inches thick and carries a flatness of +/- .005 for thicknesses greater than ½ inch. CTJ plate offers very good anodize quality and welding capabilities.

Cast Tool & Jig Plate can best be described as a cake mix. The metal is poured into a mold and cools. Then it is cut to the desired thickness and machined precision ground to hold the flatness tolerance and thickness tolerance. This can be done through a direct cast or indirect cast method.

Industries that are looking for critical flatness in tolerance are automotive, printing, aircraft, food, plastic molding, vacuum molding, electronics, check fixtures, gauges and templates, to name a few.

Aluminum Plate
Rolled Plate starts as a large ingot passing through a pair of rollers at the breakdown mill. At this mill, the plate is run through the rollers in multiple passes to determine the desired thickness, length, and width of the plate. It then goes through some finishing processes to determine width and a heating process to establish temper.

Rolled Plate is available in 2024, 6061 and 7075 alloys. Each alloy offers characteristics that can be required by certain industries. These alloys are heat-treatable alloys and are not stress relieved.

2024 Plate is typically used in aircraft structural parts, transportation equipment, and elevated temperature applications. It offers excellent strength to weight ratio and increased strength and increased hardness. 2024 plate consists of Copper.

6061 Plate is used primarily in heavy-duty structures, marine, railroad, trucks, automobiles, highway signs, welding construction, tooling and, jigs and fixtures. 6061 offers good weldability, good formability, good machinability and good corrosion resistance. 6061 plate consists of Magnesium and Silicon.

7075 Plate is primarily used in aircraft structures, missiles, keys, gears, auto bumpers and other high strength to weight requirements. 7075 offers excellent high strength to weight ratio and consists of Zinc and Magnesium.
