How to get the most from scrap
One of the questions Schupan Aluminum Sales receives frequently is "How can I get the most money for my scrap metal?" Schupan Industrial Recycling is a scrap metal processor and a division of Schupan & Sons established in 1968. This division was the birth of our corporation and continues to be a major part of the business with four industrial recycling plants located throughout Southwest Michigan and Northern Indiana.

The growth of the division is attributed to partnering with customers rather than being "just a vendor". Their unique approach saves their customers money, increases their efficiency, and increases their bottom line. Schupan Industrial Recycling processes around 20,000,000 LBS of material per month and is a leader within the industry. They have received numerous supplier awards from Alcoa, Kaiser, and many other aluminum producers.

The information below is intended to help provide you with ways to receive the best value for your scrap metal.

No. 1
Clean the material
Remove any type of contaminants: dirt, plastic, rubber, etc.

The consumer mills that utilize scrap material will only receive clean uncontaminated scrap. This way they can simply put it in the furnace. The additional money or labor savings is passed to our customers if we receive material which has no contaminants. The picture to the right illustrates a contaminated load received in our yard. No. 2
Segregate material by type
Sort aluminum, steel, copper, etc. into separate boxes.

The consumer mills normally melt specific types of material in a specific "recipe".

If any extra "ingredients" are in the recipe it reduces it's value or devalues it entirely. Schupan Industrial Recycling separates these materials for the consuming mills. The picture to the right shows aluminum extrusion mixed with steel drums.

Deliver the material
Trucking costs are very high so delivering material to our plants will allow us to pay more.

Each Schupan Industrial Recycling location has a "drive thru" retail buying operation. This means absolute convenience for our customers. The pictures below illustrate the ease and convenience of utilizing the drive thru retail locations. Our retail customers simply enter the building through an overhead door, their vehicle is unloaded and material is weighed. They are then issued a debit card which is used in a convenient ATM machine 15 feet away.

Schupan Industrial Recycling understands the value of our retail customers and works very hard to make each visit a pleasant experience. Schupan Industrial Recycling excepts all scrap metal.

At this time, Schupan is not equipped to handle automobiles, propane tanks, and other potentially hazardous materials.

Store material to achieve higher weights
We are all affected by the price of fuel these days both in our personal lives and in business.

Schupan Industrial Recycling is equipped to pick up scrap using various containers as well as van trailers, pictured below. If we drive 20 miles to pick up 5 pounds our transportation cost is the same as if we picked up 35,000 pounds. If our customers are able to accumulate more scrap material we will pay higher prices because our cost per pound will be lower. If you have any questions regarding how much material to accumulate to achieve a higher price please contact Ron Morrison at Schupan Industrial Recycling at rmorrison@schupan.com or 269-382-0000 ext. 164.
