Is Aluminum Magnetic?

When people ask if aluminum is a magnetic metal, they’re typically asking: will a magnet stick to aluminum? Unlike iron, nickel, steel, and many other metals, aluminum is not ferromagnetic and does not exhibit magnetic behavior. So:

No, aluminum is not magnetic. It is considered a non-magnetic material and has minimal magnetic properties.

In a strictly scientific sense, strongly magnetic materials tend to have a lot of unpaired electrons that align. However, aluminum has a different electron configuration, which keeps it from having a strong magnetic reaction under normal conditions. But it can be a little more complicated than that, so let’s start from the beginning.

Does a Magnet Stick to Aluminum?

Under normal circumstances, no. Pure aluminum does not exhibit strong magnetic properties, and magnets will not stick to it. This includes aluminum strips, aluminum foil, and basically every aluminum metal product. It also applies to everyday refrigerator magnets, electromagnets, and strong neodymium magnets.

What About Aluminum Alloys?

Generally, no. But certain alloys can be slightly magnetic if they have a very high nickel or iron content. These alloys may show a very minor magnetic attraction, but it would be so minor that it’s unlikely a magnet would stick to them.

What About Induced Magnetism?

Sometimes, yes. Aluminum is technically considered a paramagnetic metal, which means that it is weakly attracted to magnetic fields and can be temporarily magnetized in their presence. If aluminum is placed near an external magnetic field, it may be momentarily weakly attracted to it, but will not become permanently magnetized.

Benefits of Aluminum’s Non-Magnetic Nature

Because aluminum doesn’t stick to strong magnets, it’s possible to use them to quickly sort your magnetic and ferromagnetic scrap metals. You don’t even need sensitive equipment! A powerful magnet can be near your materials, and if the magnet moves them, you can safely assume that the materials aren’t aluminum.
